Instrument Rental Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if something happens? Do you have a Warranty?

Part of your rental price ($5/month) goes towards maintenance and repair. So if anything happens to your instrument, bring it in to the shop and we will fix it for you. The maintenance fee covers regular wear-and-tear items and even some traumatic damage.

A few examples of covered items:

  • A Flute needs a Service Adjust due to leaking keys
  • A Clarinet needs a new cork
  • A Saxophone mouthpiece gets dropped and cracked
  • A Trumpet’s valve gets stuck
  • A Trombone needs a flush and service to clean it out
  • A Violin develops a crack due to an accidental drop
  • A Viola case zipper fails
  • A Cello bow loses its hair

Basically, bring it in, and we’ll get you back up and running ASAP.

The maintenance fee does NOT cover consumable supplies such as violin strings, reeds, valve oil, books, or other supplies.

It also does not cover if the instrument gets lost, stolen, intentional damage, or damaged beyond repair.

Cost breakdown: As an example, if you are renting a violin for $23 per month, $18 of that goes towards the ownership of the instrument, and $5 goes towards maintenance and repair. This is a compulsory fee that is included in the rental price listed on our site. If you would like to opt out of the maintenance fee, you may purchase the instrument outright.

(We do have an optional rental insurance , see the FAQ below. )

3. What is included in my rental?

This depends on the instrument! Every instrument has different needs.

Brass Instruments:

  • Instrument, Mouthpiece, and Case.

Woodwinds:

  • Instrument, Mouthpiece, and Case,
  • Neckstrap (Saxophones only),
  • Cleaning rod (Flute only).

Orchestral Strings:

  • Instrument, Bow, Rosin, Cleaning Cloth, and Case,
  • Chin Rest & Shoulder Rest (Violin/Viola),
  • Rock Stop (Cello/Bass)

Depending on the instrument and school, other accessories may be necessary to operate the instrument or participate in class, such as reeds, cleaning and maintenance supplies, oils and grease, books, a music stand, etc.

Check with the instructor to find out which book your student needs and the recommended supplies. We carry it all, but every teacher has different preferences for their class.

4. Are the instruments New or Used?

We have four levels in our rental pool based on cosmetic condition:

Brand New: This instrument is in perfect condition and has never been rented.

Tier 0 (Like New): An instrument that was brand new when rented and return shortly after (due to a student changing their mind or needing a different size, etc). We have very few of these in stock and can't guarantee their availability.

Tier 1 (Upper Used): This is an instrument that has been rented a couple of times but is in great physical condition. There may be a handful of playing-related scuffs from use, but the overall function is excellent.

Tier 2 (Lower Used): This instrument has been rented multiple times and has some cosmetic damage, but is in playing condition. We call this "well loved".

All instruments in our rental pool are evaluated and repaired by our shop prior to rental. Any damage is cosmetic and does not affect the playing ability of the instrument. Sometimes our rental instruments live a hard life being played by students, but we do our best to carefully maintain our inventory and make repairs when necessary.

5. Do you buy instruments back?

Not typically. We do offer trade-ins (towards another band or orchestral instrument) or consignment, but those are typically for higher end, intermediate or professional level instruments. Please ask an employee for more information if you are interested in trading in or consigning your instrument.

If you are still renting, you can simply return the instrument to the store and we will stop taking payments. you will have paid to rent the instrument for that period of time.

6. Do you offer Rental Insurance?

We do have an optional rental insurance that is $3/month that would cover if the instrument gets lost or stolen. All you would do is bring in a police report and we would give you another instrument to finish out your rental.

7. How do I know which instrument to get?

Ideally you would have an idea of what you'd like to play, or at least narrowed down to 2-3 options. Depending how busy we are at the store when you come in, we may be able to let you try some instruments to decide what you like best.

Orchestral instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass) come in different sizes, determined by the player's height and arm length. Your orchestra teacher should size you, but we are able to do it at the store as well. Violins, Cellos, and Basses are fractional (4/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, etc) while Violas are measured in inches (12", 13", 14", 15", etc).
