My Mouthpiece Is Stuck!

First of all, Don't panic.

If you have a mouthpiece that is stuck the VERY BEST OPTION is
to use a special tool called a Mouthpiece Puller to un-stick it.

Do NOT use any type of pliers on it.
Do NOT use any kind of torsion on it.
Do NOT use any type of mallet on it.

Take it to a band director or a music shop and they can pull it for you while you wait,
without damaging the instrument or causing harm.

Mouthpieces get stuck from a variety of causes. Sometimes it happens because:
• the player twisted it on too tight
• they are using too much pressure when playing
• if the instrument takes a fall
• it's stored with the mouthpiece on for a length of time
• if the instrument isn't very clean and gets gunked together
• players absentmindedly tapping on the mouthpiece while sitting in class
and it getting stuck from the pressure.
• It happens to the best of us, but do not try to remove it yourself!!!!

Best practice to avoid a stuck mouthpiece is to regularly clean your instrument and remove the mouthpiece before storing it. Make sure when inserting the mouthpiece that you just gently rotate it into place, you don't need force to keep it in.

You don't need to make an appointment to get your mouthpiece pulled at Willamette Valley Music.
Bring it in and we'll pull it while you wait. This is a free service.
(Very occasionally, more work is needed to remove a mouthpiece and we have to keep the instrument for a bit to pull it.
This is rare and we'll do our best to pull it quickly and safely. Some shop time may apply.)
